It is an important place because of the fact that it is the birth place of local hero Juan Santamaria after whom the main international airport is being named in the city.
Alajuela is rich in history, before the Columbian occupation the land came under the Huetar Kingdom of the West and was inhabited by the local native tribes. At time of Spanish invasion they were lead by chief Garabito. It is a laid back city with a very friendly Tico population so it should be on the top list of places you must visit in your life time.

At Zoo Avenue, you can see almost all species of birds and monkeys found in Costa Rica.
